Nathan BertlingHow long have you been in Greenville?
Four yearsMost interesting fact about you:
I love nonfiction books, almost as much as my wife Hallie loves faerie tales.Your background:
I was born and raised in nearby Spartanburg. I was the eldest of four children, the one that was the most talkative in the family. I have always been interested in learning about other people. Having freedom when young, I always spent the time exploring the nooks and crannies of my neighbors' yards when I was outside.
I graduated from Furman University in 1996 and had the opportunity to spend time in Charlotte, Atlanta and Orlando. I also had the opportunity in nearby Asheville to study under Ben Long, an American painter known for his prolific fresco, work and portraiture.
In 2015 I finally settled down to what is now home here in Greenville. I enjoy traveling with my wife and exploring the arts. Greenville is also home to many talents in the arts community. Currently reading or watching:
I usually have 2-3 books going. Currently: The Spirit of the Disciplines by Dallas Willard; A Peculiar Orthodoxy by Jeremy Begbie; and various books on artistic techniques.Hobby:
Trying new restaurants! Tagline / Motto:
"Enthralled with the wonder of people and place."Who do you work for?
I work part-time for Suburban Paint Company, a local business that has been serving the community since 1960. My favorite story from Suburban is that I met my lovely wife while providing excellent customer service! It pays to fix problems and love what you do for work. You never know who you will meet.
I am also building my practice as a fine art painter and draftsman through my studio. For more info, check out my website @nathanbertling.com
. What is your day-to-day on the job?
At Suburban, I help customers with color and paint for their homes and businesses, while also selling art supplies and giving technical advice to fellow makers & creatives.
At Nathan Bertling Studio, I draw and paint what moves me. I also take commissions and teach students privately. How do you think Greenville would describe you in one word?
