Name: Jordan Finlay
How long have you been in Greenville? I was born in 1985 at Greenville Memorial Hospital and have lived in Greenville pretty much my entire life, with the exception of a few years after high school.
Most interesting fact about you: This is a tough one! I once rode a six-foot tall unicycle for almost two miles in Christmas parade.
Your background: My roots run deep in the Upstate. Both my wife, Kellyn, and I come from families who have called the the Golden Strip area home since the late 1800's. In fact, our families have lived and worked in the same area for over five generations.
I was born and raised in Simpsonville, and graduated from Hillcrest High School in 2003 before heading to The Citadel to pursue a degree in Health Exercise and Sports Science. I graduated in 2007, and promptly married the love of my life.
After teaching PE and coaching in North Charleston for a year, we decided to move back home. She went back to school to become an educator herself, and I started my career in Greenville County Schools teaching and coaching at Riverside Middle School. We've now been married for eleven years. We have been blessed with three amazing boys (ages 9, 6, and 2) and a great community of friends and family.
In 2014 I graduated with a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership and Supervision from Clemson University and began my career in school administration.
After four years of serving as assistant principal at Ralph Chandler and Mauldin Middle, I was hired as the principal of Hughes Academy. I'm now in my second year serving the Hughes community. I can truly say that I love my job and I'm excited about the future.
Currently reading or watching: I'm currently reading Leverage Leadership 2.0 – A Practical Guide to Building Exception Schools by Paul Bambrick-Santoyo. As far as TV goes, if I'm not watching sports, then it's usually old episodes of Parks and Recreation on Netflix.
Hobby: I enjoy being competitive, playing sports, and staying fit. These days it's mostly golf and yoga. I also like entertaining friends and family, cooking, and I dabble in woodworking.
Tagline / Motto: "Things work out best for those who make the best of how things work out." – John Wooden
Who do you work for? Greenville County Schools - Principal at Hughes Academy of Science and Technology
What is your day-to-day on the job? As any principal would tell you, no two days are the same.
Working in a middle school is a unique experience in itself, and there is never a dull moment. My goal is to serve our school community in a way that supports the growth of everyone involved.
I try to be very "present" in our classrooms and hallways, so I don't spend a lot of time in the office.
Whether I'm working with our school leaders to complete a new project, resolving an issue with students, or designing a new instructional development plan, everything we do at Hughes is aimed at preparing our students to become productive and honorable citizens.
