Name: John Harkes
How long have you been in Greenville? Four weeks
Most interesting fact about you: I was the first American soccer player to score the English Goal of the Year, and the first to win the English League Cup (1-0 over Manchester United).
Your background: I grew up in Kearny, New Jersey.
I played college soccer at the University of Virginia before leaving to join the U.S. Men's National Team and play in the 1988 Olympics. I went on to represent the U.S. in the 1990 and 1994 World Cups and made 90 appearances overall with the team. I moved to England in 1990 to play for Sheffield Wednesday, Derby County, West Ham Utd, and played in England for 6 years before returning to the U.S. to help launch Major League Soccer as the first player signed by D.C. United in 1996.
Since retiring in 2002, I've coached, worked media with ESPN and Fox, and advised at many levels of American Soccer. Currently reading or watching: David Baldacci's new novel, "End Game", and "Mandela's Way".
Hobby: Playing pool and ping pong, we have a table back home in Virginia and I enjoy playing with my family.
Tagline / Motto: It's not necessarily a motto, but I try to approach life in a way that I'm always seeking knowledge, evolving, growing. One of the reasons I got into coaching after my days as a player is I'm always looking to grow the game in any way or at any level I can and pass along that knowledge to others in the soccer community.
