Name: Charles Mayfield
Most interesting fact about you: My wife and I started The Ellis Mayfield Foundation, a non-profit that provides support to families of children with pediatric brain tumors in memory of our son Ellis.
Your background: I was born to and raised by Walter and Bootie Mayfield in Anderson, SC. I have three siblings, Walter, Elizabeth, and Ann.
I grew up in Central Presbyterian Church and went to T. L. Hanna High School where I was a member of the 1980 4-A State Championship Soccer team. After High School, I went to Presbyterian College where I was a member of the Blue Hose Soccer team and Theta Chi fraternity. Upon graduation in 1987, I began teaching at D. R. Hill Middle School and started the varsity soccer program at Byrnes High School.
It was during my years at D. R. Hill that I met my lovely bride to be Shea Hanner. We were married in 1991 and had four children, Sullivan, Ellis, Rebekah, and Torre. Five years later I then moved to Mauldin High school to teach and coach. I was at Mauldin for eight years where we had many successful seasons, winning an upper-state championship, and I was recognized as the South Carolina High School Soccer Coach of the Year.
I began my career as an administrator during my last year at Mauldin High School. I then became an administrator at Ware Shoals High School for 9 years, where I was principal of both the Jr. and Sr. High Schools. Unfortunately, during this time my 6 year old son Ellis was diagnosed with a brain tumor.
After two years of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation Ellis lost his battle with the tumor. In his memory we started The Ellis Mayfield Foundation to provide support to families of children with brain tumors.
Upon leaving Ware Shoals, I had the opportunity to return to Greenville as Principal of J. L. Mann High School, where I have been for the past 10 years. While at J. L. Mann, our school has been recognized as a Finalist for Palmetto's Finest and I was named Greenville County Schools' 2018 Administrator of the Year.
My family and I are all members of Fountain Inn Presbyterian Church, where I am an Elder and teach the Senior High Sunday School class.
Currently reading or watching: I am currently reading The Testing by Joelle Charbonneau and just finished watching The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
Hobby: Camping in Montreat, bike riding, astronomy, reading current events, going to Clemson football and basketball games
